How Secure is Linux
January 25th, 2008
The facilitation of the spread of malware is made more possible when a software is widely used thus maximizing the number of those that can be infected. Slowly patched software also maximizes the time the malware remains effective while maximizing development effort for new ones. Monolithic software or that which has no compartmentalization of components likewise maximizes the damage a malware can do.
Linux has a small user base that discourages malware development, rapid updates that neutralize new threats and a compartmentalized structure that isolates damaged sections. There have been file viruses that were written specifically for Linux but none have yet been propagated successfully. Proponents of Linux believe that they have a more secure platform because all the codes are reviewed by so many people that a bug easily becomes visible. Such is the principle behind the so-called Linus’ Law.
The Digital Photo Frame
January 24th, 2008
What comes next after digital photography? A digital picture frame, of course! Perceived as a natural progression of digital photography, the digital picture frame is the newest way to display your precious digital pictures. It is basically an electronic device which functions like a photo album except much better. It is able to hold thousands of digital photos by simply copying the images onto a small memory card which is inserted into the frame.
Digital photo frames can also display the photos in a TV set and most display the photos to view as a slideshow with adjustable time intervals. Although it typically displays pictures directly from a camera’s memory card, some frames can provide internal memory storage. Others can load pictures over the Internet from RSS feeds.
Carbon Accounting
January 24th, 2008
The market for carbon accounting will most likely widen as more companies realize that they will have to do some serious assessment of their contribution to the global warming crisis. Carbon emissions have to be weighed against the size of a company and its plans for growth. However, the beginning and the end of the carbon footprint of retailers with long and varied supply chains may be almost impossible to tell.
Climate changes have manifested their serious financial impact on business as super storms wreck havoc on projected company earnings. Moves are already taking place to require public companies to disclose their financial risks from climate change. Investors can force companies to shape up and play their part in cleaning the mess.
Business-grade Instant Messaging
January 23rd, 2008
Enterprise Instant Messaging (EIM) was created in response to the demand for business-grade Instant Messaging (IM). There was also the need to ensure security and legal compliance as millions of consumer IM accounts are being used by employees of companies and organizations for business purposes. Lotus software initially launched the IBM Lotus some time in 1998 with Microsoft following suit with its Microsoft Exchange. Succeeding developments consisted of the Microsoft Office Live Communications Server and the Office Communications Server 2007.
IBM Lotus and Microsoft have both introduced federation between their EIM systems and some of the public IM networks so that a single interface may be used by employees to their internal EIM system and their AOL, MSN and Yahoo! Contacts. There are bound to be risks and liabilities for companies without effective management and support for IM use, thus the need to consider the aspect of security.
Racial Profiling Technology
January 22nd, 2008
It has been known for sometime now that criminals leave traces of themselves at crime scenes whether it is in the form of blood, semen, hair or a scrape of skin. A unique genetic fingerprint is left behind that will establish the presence of one person with certainty. Thus is the known side of DNA Testing.
DNA however, has a lesser known aspect to it. DNA traces also leave clues of ancestry and appearance which can eventually be used as a foolproof police sketch. This could be far more helpful to the resolution of the crime than typically unreliable descriptions from eyewitnesses. The science should prove itself reliable especially if there are differences in opinion between the DNA markers.
More Than Just Video Conferencing
January 22nd, 2008
Standard video conferencing is associated with prohibitive costs. The introduction of web conferencing is an important development in business communication as it has enabled cost to decrease while application increases. More than ever, business can be done in the comfort of people’s homes courtesy of their desktop computer. Web conferencing has allowed users to do many things at a click of a button, doing away with the substantial cost entailed in traveling to do business. It has provided a suitable substitute to face-to-face meetings as users see, hear, text, chat, present and share information.
For all intents and purposes, people can meet through web conferencing whenever and wherever needed as long as the participants have access to an online PC or laptop. High costs associated with bandwidth are no longer a deterrent to communication due to the tremendous savings afforded by web conferencing.
A Closer Look on Human Natural Reflexes
January 21st, 2008
A reflex is a spontaneous and often unconscious action towards a triggering element. An itch triggers a person to scratch which is one way of warning that something is putting pressure on the skin such as a mosquito. Foreign invaders such as moulds, pollen and dust mites triggers coughing to help clear the mouth, throat or lung tissues. Sneezing is very similar to coughing except that it is directed through the nose.
Vomiting is usually caused by harmful substances that managed to reach the stomach or the upper segment of the small intestines. Tearing results when dust or debris irritates the eyes but the fluid causes the eyelids to overflow to wash away the irritant. These reflexes, although a bit annoying provides essential protection against toxins before they can cause further harm.
Yes to U.S. Players
January 21st, 2008
Not many industries have flourished on the internet as much as online casinos have. It seems that people took on online gambling naturally with as much enthusiasm as the original games in live casinos offer. But due to restrictions congress passed on U.S. players last year, the industry has been almost completely blocked off for U.S. players. Most sites do not accept deposits from U.S. players and most Americans can only enjoy this form of entertainment at physical destinations such as Las Vegas or Atlantic City. There are however sites that do accept American players and USA online casinos (available at usaonlinecasinos.org) does a great job of listing them and providing helpful reviews for each site. Not only do they feature extensive reviews for each site, they also list special bonuses new players can receive with their first deposit.
