Unofficial Weather Forecasting
February 16th, 2008
Thousands of people in all parts of the world are engaged in the profession of weather forecasting. Before advanced weather forecasting technology, people who live in the open such as sailors and farmers had acquired considerable skill in foretelling weather for short periods of time. This was done by watching the sky and the movements of the barometer and the wind vane. However, the most that can be done by any individual without the help of official services or technological instruments are to predict the weather for a few hours or at the most, a day ahead.
Amateur forecasting made liberal use of signs such as dry weather is likely to occur if the sky and ground mists clear quickly after the sunrise or a clear sky and low humidity indicate the possibility of low temperatures at night. The need for ways that could produce more accurate forecasting was quite evident.
The Electric Aircraft Takeoff
February 13th, 2008
The introduction of the E-plane ended the inability to use an electric motor as the energy source for a manned airplane. The first E-plane was a compact two-seat carbon composite plane powered by Toyota Prius batteries and a 100-hp motor. It had an impractically short range, very much similar to the earliest electric cars. The plane’s range was expected to increase dramatically once it flew on fuel-cell alone.
A fuel-cell airplane is a lot quieter and more efficient wherein the propeller would be the only source of noise. The plane will be able to fly for at least an hour on two pounds of hydrogen. NASA studies suggest that cheaper fuel cells is the most viable alternative to heavy piston engines if the automotive industry would be more open to fuel cell cars.
Collecting Without Delivering?
February 11th, 2008
Early in the history of search engine optimization, smaller SEO companies and consultants charged for services that they were unable to deliver. However, majority of these where attributed as part of the industry’s growing pains or simply a case of not knowing better rather than a deliberate attempt to rip-off unsuspecting people.
The large scale SEO operations at present are en entirely different case as some choose to make easy money out of people whose only desire is to effectively market their website on the Internet. In fact, many SEO clients are recycled or have previously worked with another company who has obviously failed to deliver. Such companies give a bad name to the otherwise lofty undertaking of search engine optimization.
Security System of Computers
February 10th, 2008
There is a system or group of systems in the computer that acts as the security system within. This is what is called the firewall which enforces an access control policy between two networks. Its primary purpose is to protect a network from unauthorized access.
Firewalls effectively function as a protective boundary between a computer and the outside world by screening incoming and outgoing traffic. They also assist in preventing computers from unwilling participation in attacking other systems aside from shielding them from unsolicited attacks. Firewalls have been quite efficient in various threats such as session hacking, operating system bugs, denial of service attacks, email bombs, spam and viruses.
Hacking as a Profession?
February 10th, 2008
The word hacking carries a very negative meaning that it can be hard to imagine someone doing it as a legal profession. Many organizations are starting to realize that they would be in a better position to evaluate the threat of intruders gaining admission into their system if they could anticipate the offensive action. One way to do this is to hire professionals that would think like the enemy and attempt to do exactly as an intruder would.
This is where the so-called ethical hackers enter the picture. These people should be completely trustworthy since the responsibility of testing a client’s system security will place them in an advantageous position of gaining confidential information. This is the reason why ex-hackers are not considered for the position. Trust has been placed a higher consideration than hacker skills gained from questionable experience.
Safe Internet Banking
February 8th, 2008
Money has a way of inviting crime that can be hard to beat. It is no wonder that the world of Internet banking is continuously exposed to the attempts of unscrupulous human elements. Even with risk involved, there are several ways to ensure safe online banking.
It is highly advisable not to use a public computer for the purpose. Passwords should be composed of letters and numbers which should be changed regularly. Responding to an email or phone call requesting for confidential details such as banking passwords should be totally avoided. Legitimate parties such as banks will never ask anyone to divulge his/her personal security details. Personal and credit card information should only be given if one is sure he/she is dealing with a trusted source.
