Maintaining Online Courtesy

January 17th, 2008

Courtesy is something that has to be given in the same manner that it is extended in face-to-face conversation. Abusive language and name-calling are some of the things that should signal a person to break off and move on. It is best to avoid troublemakers as much as possible to maximize the benefits of online communication.

The chatroom is a fertile ground for abuse and hoaxes but need not be so with the use of basic courtesy and common sense. Filling the screen with gibberish messages and messages that are repeated over and over is a classic example of bad chatroom behavior. Unsolicited commercial e-mail or spams are very much unwelcome to most Internet users. Not many people also have much time on their hands thus it would be better to send emails using suitable subject lines. Making sure that you only send virus-free files is of course another right move towards courtesy.

I remember just a few years ago when I would sometimes consider setting my browser not to display website images in order to improve the download speed of certain sites. This seems more than laughable today when bandwidth issues go way beyond standard web pages and a good broadband connection is measured in how fast you can download full HDTV quality videos and conduct live video and audio VOIP conferencing. In fact, broadband service keeps growing at almost a linear rate that it almost deserves its own “Moore’s Law”. Current offers by top broadband providers such as BT is reaching as much as a whopping 8MB download speed. There are however many factors that can affect your broadband connection which aren’t always dependant on the package you sign up for. In many cases consumers sign up for a high speed package unknowing that they can’t really benefit from their package’s true potential due to various technical issues such as their computer’s compatibility and the distance they reside from their local telephone exchange. BT encourages their customers to take an initial online speedtest to determine their potential connection speed using their service so consumers know what to expect and don’t have their connection suffering from a weak link in the chain.

What Makes a Site Safe?

November 20th, 2007

Determining the security of online purchases or transactions can be a very tricky deal. It is much easier if the seller has an established brick-and-mortar store and has earned an excellent reputation for fair treatment of customers, since they would probably do the same for their online services. Do we totally avoid companies having no such reference or thread with care and awareness?

A secure online company will go out of their way to create secure locations online for their customers. It makes sense to look for a real address and phone number with at least one contact name especially if dealing with a company for the first time. Use common sense in determining whether the information being asked for is really required. Customers should never push through with online transactions that make them uncomfortable since this is a sign that a company’s credentials have not been fully established or confirmed.

Working Away From the Office

Some careers can be better enhanced if telecommunicating is used rather than enduring long driving hours to get from the house to the office. It helps the employee stay connected to the office even without his/her physical presence. Specialized technology is of course required depending on the type of job of the user. However, the basic equipment would normally include a computer, printer, phone and data lines.

Telecommunicating affords greater flexibility in time but working at home or anywhere not considered a formal office can have its own setbacks. It would help to create a working routine that is businesslike as possible such as working hours and work-related matters.

The real art of Internet searching can only be discovered through the use of search engines. A search engine helps a user to find anything amidst all the electronic noise going on in the web. One is said to have mastered the art when he/she knows how to find exactly what is being looked for.

Using a search engine actually translates into searching the engine’s data base of web pages. A search engine is more thorough, the more texts its crawler collects as often that it can. For really specific searches, a specialized directory can find sites on the Internet on almost any subject or interest.
